I don't know why it isn't more well known than it is. I read it and "100 Years of Solitude" back-to-back...both are utterly brilliant, in my opinion.Robby Virushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01206018782013858134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5426133566476743259.post-56768578844401725502010-11-18T20:41:45.311-08:002010-11-18T20:41:45.311-08:00Hey there.

I read the book two times and found the political side the least important out of all the major themes in the novel. I find that all the political plot is placed only as the story's engine, that is what makes it go forward. What's most important is Jack's development as well as the Boss' corruption and late redemption.
I found Jack's story incredibly touching and beautiful. I learned many things through Jacks indifference and understanding of the responsibility in his actions. Thanks for such a review!
May I recommend you a book? It's by another argentinian author (i see you plan on reading Borges). The novel's called Hopscotch (Rayuela in spanish) and the author is Julio Cortázar. I hope you read it, it's a really original book.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5426133566476743259.post-29472841604345721072010-10-20T12:09:15.435-07:002010-10-20T12:09:15.435-07:00You are one funny dude! In the book, Jack Burden is a bit world weary when he meets Willie...he's been divorced, and he dropped out of grad school. It will be interesting for you to compare the book to the movies!Robby Virushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01206018782013858134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5426133566476743259.post-60472755440257747422010-09-25T17:00:26.400-07:002010-09-25T17:00:26.400-07:00Last year swedish television broadcast both filmve...Last year swedish television broadcast both filmversions of "All the king´s men" and I added both to my DVD-collection. Inspired by your post, I made a batch of rice chocolate toffee and watched them both this evening.

I started with the 1949 version, written and directed by Robert Rossen and went on to the 2006 version, written and directed by Stephen Zaillian. A lot has happened in film making in sixty years, the acting is very different, very much more naturalistic these days. And the scripts are more explicit about sexuality. But there were things I prefered with the old version. John Ireland´s Jack Burden is much more innocent and passionate than Jude Law´s Burden, who seems desillusioned and world-weary from the start. You can really believe how he can fall for Broderick Crawford´s initially naive Willie Stark and why he remains loyal to him. Sean Penn´s Stark is just never that sympathetic, even when he is good, and Law and Penn does not have much chemistry. In many ways it´s a love story between these two men, isn´t it?

Perhaps I was just affected by having watched the old movie first. And now I´m even more curious about the book, so I just ordered it from amazon. And here I thought I had a shortcut...

Have I ever said this is a great blog you have, Mr Virus? I´m looking forward to your next read.Viktorianoreply@blogger.com
